The first ADLaM Serif Font

Glossa Serif is a contemporary serif typeface designed for the ADLaM script, used by the Fula people of West Africa. While many existing ADLaM fonts focus on functional sans-serif forms, Glossa Serif introduces the elegance and systematic proportions of classical Latin serifs. Developed in communication with the script’s inventors, the Barry brothers, this project aims to bridge traditional heritage with modern editorial standards.

Description

Introducing ADLaM Glossa Serif!

Glossa Serif is the first dedicated serif typeface for the ADLaM script, designed to bring typographic diversity and long-form readability to the Pulaar language. Created in collaboration with Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry — the inventors of ADLaM — Glossa Serif preserves the script's inherent calligraphic warmth while providing the structural authority expected of a text typeface. The design features bracketed serifs, moderate stroke contrast (2.5:1), and 68 core ADLaM glyphs covering the complete alphabet as standardized in Unicode. Each glyph was developed from hand-drawn sketches provided by the script creators, refined through expert typographic feedback, and optimized for editorial, academic, and formal publications. Glossa Serif fills a critical gap in ADLaM typography — offering the first serif option for books, magazines, reports, and any context requiring sustained reading comfort and typographic credibility.
