Empowering Communities Through Literacy
Winden Jangen ADLaM is a global non-profit organization dedicated to expanding education and information access through the ADLaM script. Headquartered in New York with a primary operations hub in Guinea, we support schools, provide learning resources, and champion literacy initiatives for underserved communities and adult learners. We believe that if language is the vehicle of culture, writing is the vehicle that drives it forward.
About us
What is ADLaM
ADLaM is a writing system created for the Fulani language (Pulaar/Fulfulde), one of Africa's most widely spoken languages with over 40 million speakers across West and Central Africa.
The name ADLaM stands for Alkule Dangdee Leñol Mulugol — meaning "the alphabet which protects the peoples from vanishing."
Created by the Barry brothers, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye, ADLaM has become a symbol of cultural preservation and empowerment for Fulani communities worldwide.
About us
Fulbhe or Fulani
The most spread out and the largest nomadic tribe in the world. From the shores of Senegambia to the banks of the Nile and the Red Sea.
Fulani is one of the largest tribes of Africa numbering more than 60 Million, and spread across the Sahel from Senegal to Eritrea. They are called by different names depending on the language: Fulani, Fula, Peul, Pul, Fut, Fellata, Tekruri, Toucouleur, Peulh, Wasolonka, Kourte, etc. but they refer to themselves as Pullo (singular) and Fulbhe (plural). They are traditionally a nomadic people but after embracing Islam, they began living a more sedentary lifestyle.
